A trip to the supermarket can be rather challenging, as increasingly, the supermarket shelves are filled with packaged foods high in salt content. Foods to avoid, include:
Smoked and cured meats
Frozen dinners
Pre-prepared or ready meals
Canned meals
Condiments and sauces
Bread
Salted nuts and seeds
Processed cheeses
Crackers, biscuits and croutons
SALT SKIP TIP: Always read the Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) label on packaged foods. It is best to read the Per 100g column.
Choose lower sodium options among similar foods. Food with less than 400mg per 100g are good, and less than 120mg per 100g is best.
